National Innovation Visa (NIV) - Subclass 858

A Permanent Pathway for Exceptional Talent

Australia’s National Innovation Visa (NIV) is a permanent visa pathway for exceptionally talented individuals with an internationally recognised record of achievement.

National Innovation Visa (NIV) - Australia

Subclass 858

The National Innovation Visa (NIV) Subclass 858 is a permanent Australian visa designed for individuals with an internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement. It offers a direct route to permanent residency for those who can make a significant contribution to Australia’s future prosperity.

At McKkr’s, we help talented professionals, researchers, entrepreneurs, innovators, athletes and creatives understand the NIV pathway and prepare a strong, evidence-based application.

Your achievements can open the door to Australia. Let us help you present them effectively.

Who is the NIV For?

The Australian Government describes the NIV as a pathway for established and emerging leaders with high-calibre talent and skills who can contribute to Australia’s future prosperity. It recognises exceptional and outstanding achievement across a broad range of fields, including:

  • Profession
  • Academia and research
  • Sport
  • The arts

Who Can Apply

The NIV pathway is relevant to high-achieving individuals such as:

  • Global researchers and academics
  • Entrepreneurs and business innovators
  • Innovative investors
  • Technology and industry leaders
  • Athletes
  • Artists and creatives
  • Other internationally recognised professionals

Why Choose the National Innovation Visa?

Unlike many skilled migration pathways, the NIV focuses strongly on exceptional achievement and potential contribution, rather than simply occupation, points or years of work experience.

Successful NIV applicants may be able to:

  • Live permanently in Australia
  • Work and study in Australia
  • Access Medicare, subject to eligibility
  • Sponsor eligible family members
  • Travel to and from Australia for 5 years
  • Potentially apply for Australian citizenship if eligible

The NIV is therefore an important pathway for highly accomplished individuals seeking long-term opportunities in Australia.

The NIV Application Process

Build the case around your achievements.
EOI Preparation

The EOI is a critical stage because the Department considers the information and evidence submitted when determining candidates for invitation.

The Department requires applicants to submit information including a passport biodata page, CV/resume and highest qualification, together with other relevant supporting information. Information cannot be added to the EOI after submission.

Get it right before you submit.

Invitation Stage

The Department conducts monthly NIV invitation rounds and considers EOIs against the relevant achievement indicators and priority framework.

An invitation is not a guarantee that the visa will ultimately be granted.

If invited, move quickly and carefully.

Visa Application

After receiving an invitation, you can proceed with the Subclass 858 visa application.

The Department states that an invited applicant has 60 days from the invitation date to lodge the visa application. This period cannot be extended.

McKkr’s can assist you through the application stage.

Why Choose McKkr's

Presenting a case for exceptional talent requires more than a list of achievements. It requires a clear, well-evidenced narrative that meets the Department’s criteria. Our team works closely with applicants to identify the strongest evidence of their international recognition and build a compelling, well-structured application.
